Common Condition Issues

Punctures and Tears

Punctures and tears can endanger the integrity of your painting causing canvas deterioration and paint loss.  Small areas may matched up on the front and patched from behind.  The front tear area is stablized and inpainted to match colors and textures.

Fraying Canvas

Sometimes the canvas or linen can deteriorate to the point that it no longer provides a safe substrate for the paint layer.  This can lead to continued and possibly catastrophic paint loss. In these cases the painting is often “relined” which means it is adhered down onto another, sturdy piece of canvas or linen. Then that canvas is stretch on either the original bars or new ones. This goes a long way to keeping your painting in the best condition it can be.

Cracking

Cracking occurs when the top layers of paint expand and contract at a different rate than the underlying ones.  This can cause the paint layer to flake off and result in loss.  It also allows moisture to get in under the cracks and cause further cracking around it.

Missing Frame Ornaments

Frames can offten get damaged, causing parts to break off and finishes to wear down or get scratched.  These parts can be recreated and refinished to match the rest of the frame.  Finishes like gold leaf can be touched up or reapplied in full.

Mold

Moist environments can cause mold to bloom.  This can be a serious problem as spores get into the fibers of the paper.   With proper care, these spores can be neutralized and cleaned out of the paper.  Handling of moldly artworks is delicate as spores can spread.

Creases and Ripples

Improper storage can cause paper to crease or become wavy.  Most prints can be flattened and creases can be minimized or removed altogether.
